The American society for the most part don’t realize that some social problems have gotten out of control. Or in fact they don’t even consider them “social problems” as if people aren’t being affected by it. This is the case with the portrayal of body image. Society itself has always painted what the ideal body is for women/young women. The ideal body has fluctuated as the years’ progress but the end result is not satisfying for the women because in reality this “ideal” body does not exist. Their only hurting themselves.  They are taking extreme measures to achieve this body that is desirable. It’s important that we realize that trying to achieve the ideal body is a growing concern. This issue has become mainstream it is everywhere we turn and constantly reminding women that they have to look a certain way to fit into society. Many don’t realize that this is a serious concern because we see it everywhere that not it’s become normal for us and were compelled to follow.

It affects both locally and globally. People need to admit that trying to achieve the ideal body is a problem. It first begins as a local issue. In where the people judge others for their physical appearance and make them feel uncomfortable and degraded. That’s when women/young teens turn to dangerous methods I hopes that people no longer will look at them that way. The ideal body image not only affects people in the U.S but globally as well. The U.S is considered a first world country so other countries are looking up to our country. That is why the search for the ideal then starts affecting other countries. Those countries are seeing how the mainstream is constantly trying to sell us an ideal body that does not exist. And as those international women/young women see the American women become someone that doesn’t exist. They will also try to purse the ideal body. At the end it becomes a chain, because when a country has resources and those who don’t those are the ones to follow behind as well to be at their level. This is when trying to achieve the ideal body becomes a problem because it starts locally or nationally in this case and then expands to different parts of the world. Soon after all the women/young women are trying to achieve the ideal body that is being sold. It’s important that we stop the propaganda of this “ideal” body that doesn’t exist. Women and young women must realize that those women in ads, movies, and etc. are not average women.

Renee Engeln, was a teacher that decided to study how images on the media affect women. What drove her to study this was because her female students were constantly being concerned about their physical appearance. She noticed how they were not satisfied with any body part and were trying to perfect their “flaws”. In this Ted talk Renee, talks about her findings from her research in what she calls BEAUTY SICKNESS”.
