My name is Monica Bautista, I was born in Torrance and raised in the city of Gardena. I’m of Mexican background and because of the high population of Mexican-Americans/Mexicans here in Los Angeles, CA I’m exposed to my culture on a daily basis; language, traditions, food and even religion. Despite being a very timid person, I’m very caring and always looking after the well-being of others. Since I can remember I have always helped people if and when I can and get a joy out of doing it. I’m very determined as well in my personal and educational life when I put my mind into something I’ll achieve it and get it done. My number one goal is to continue to purse my education at least to a masters; to have more knowledge and qualifications to be able to help people who are going through I rough patch in sociology. A personal/academic goal would be to stop guessing every decision I take, I want to be able just to make a decision and not question it afterwards, because I know if continue to do so it will affect me later on in my career. My interest in the topic of body image is because that was an issue that was tormenting me years ago. I was never happy with my physical appearance I felt overweight. I always saw on the media and on tv how women’s bodies were portrayed; skinny bodies and that wasn’t me. I became so self-conscious about how I looked when I ate, tried on cloths etc. Those people who advertise this “perfect body” play mind games on those girls and women who aren’t happy with how they look. There’s stories out there of girls and women and teenagers who are not happy with their body’s and are doing things that will give them this perfect body that’s being portrayed in the media that in reality doesn’t exist. Extreme measure is taken to have a thing body; excessive exercise, not eating, taking weight lose pills that everytually leads to serious health issues. That’s why I choose this topic because I know there’s people out there who are struggling with this issue and the media/TV is making things worse for them constantly advertising the ideal body and make those people struggling to feel unsatisfied with themselves and will do whatever to “fit in”.
